Salt comes in the form of small white crystals, just like sugar. But it tastes pretty much the opposite and in the body, it does pretty much the opposite, as you will discover later.

There's table salt, Himalayan salt, sea salt, celtic salt, black Hawaiian salt, ... But what is the difference? Isn't salt just salt?

Nope. Salt found in processed food is often just plain NaCl, sodium chloride. That is what refined table salt consists of.

On the contrary, Sea salt or Himalayan salt do not just consist of sodium and chloride. The mineral diversity is what makes these other salts superior to refined table salt. They also contain a bunch of other minerals, like magnesium and calcium.

But these salts are different from each other as well. Guess why Himalayan salt is pink?^^ It's because of its iron content. Himalayan salt also is the salt that is highest in potassium. Hawaiian black salt gets its deep, black color from the addition of activated charcoal.

With sea salt you have to be very careful though. Yes, it does contain precious minerals, but due to the plastic pollution in the oceans, modern sourced sea salt can contain microplastics. And we don't want them because they are endocrine disrupting chemicals that mess with our body's hormone system. And this can make you fat, just saying.

The most important fact that is often neglected: Salt is actually an essential micronutrient, like vitamins. If we do not get enough, our body will run into problems. But why the heck would the health industry tell us to reduce the intake of an essential nutrient?

I will explain why in the next article of this series.
