Why BPA free is not really BPA free

11.11.2017

BPA, aka bisphenol A, is a polymer used in a variety of plastic containers. However, it is known to have adverse effects in humans. This is why some companies now produce BPA-free containers.

But BPA has certain technological properties and it's cheap, that's why the industry/producers kinda don't really wanna give up on it.

As clever as they are, they came up with an alternative substance that is technically not BPA...

...but basically, it still is BPA.

It is called BPS. Bisphenol S. It is almost the same as BPA, just varying a bit in chemical composition.

But more importantly: BPS has similar adverse health effects as BPA!

But as it is not technically BPA, a bottle labelled BPA-free may still contain BPS!

When you look at the bottom of a plastic bottle, you often see a number in a triangle. This is the recycling code.

Practical take away: A bottle labelled BPA-free but showing Nr.7 on the bottom contains 99.9% of the time BPS. Maybe put it back on the shelf...? Up to you, as always ;)
